In what ways does Don Quixote (by Miguel de Cervantes) appear in our culture today? Write an essay comparing Cervantes’ Don Quixote to a contemporary film, television show, or other clear intertext with Quixote. The text might be an adaptation of the novel (for example, the Orson Wells Don Quixote or the musical The Man from La Mancha), a transformation (Monsignor Quixote), or one that uses themes, structures, or motifs of the novel in a way that can only be explained intertextually (example films: Hoax, Borat, Nacho Libre). Please chose just one film/ or any other text to compare it to Cervantes’ Don Quixote. The paper must argue a specific, narrow thesis, supported by evidence from both texts. When providing evidence from Cervantes’ Don Quixote, please use the Edith Grossman translation of the text. You must both establish the grounds for comparison and also prove a comparative thesis. That is, your task is not just to demonstrate the fact the texts/or film are connected, but to articulate what meaning the connection creates. Some questions to consider: what interpretation of Cervantes does this text/ or film employ? Does it show us something new about Cervantes? How is our understanding of the text/ or film enhanced by seeing it as a Quixote?
