When we face a problem or a question we can do it two ways:
expert intuition, we apply our direct experience on similar situations
strategic intuition, combine direct or indirect experience in similar situations and combine them.
We will be a reproductive or productive thinker depending on how much we use one or the other intuition.
Strategic intuition is related with the concept of “deep analogical thinking:
It is the practice of recognizing conceptual similarities in multiple domains or scenarios that may seem to have little in common on the surface” (Range – D.J. Epstein)
Expert intuition usually generates incremental innovation, when the solution of a problem is the evolution due to a better knowledge to a previous one. Strategic intuition usually generate recombinant innovation, think on suitcases in wheel, Waze (sensors+data+gps+social network) …’ Digital innovation is recombinant innovation in its purest form,’ Brynjolfsson. (“Rebel ideas: The power of diverse thinking”-M. Syed)
New problems benefit of strategic intuition, we become productive creators as we are able to find solutions that we have not experience before. What do you think is the biggest barrier to use the strategic intuition?
